Categories of the dental emergency service

If you have dental problems that require immediate treatment, we are always there for you as an emergency dental practice. You can get a same-day appointment with us during regular opening hours.

Category 1

Examples of acute category 1 dental emergencies are advanced abscesses with severe swelling, knocked out or severely displaced teeth, open wounds with unstoppable and severe bleeding in the mouth and jaw fractures. In these cases, an immediate visit to the emergency dentist is necessary.

Category 2

Root infections with moderate to severe pain, broken but not displaced or fallen teeth. This emergency category should be treated promptly, but is less urgent if the pain can be controlled with painkillers.

Category 3

Fallen out fillings, crowns, as well as fallen out veneers, denture pressure points and sharp edges are common dental problems that require immediate attention. This category of dental emergencies can usually wait until the following day if the pain is manageable with painkillers.

Simply call us at our practice in Stettbach: 044 215 51 51 or Oerlikon: 044 322 54 54 , or drop by directly, even without an appointment. If you call after 9 pm and our practice does not have an emergency service for the city of Zurich, you can also contact the emergency dental service for the city of Zurich at night by dialling 0800 33 66 55.

Emergency treatment at CITYDENTAL takes about 30-45 minutes and is mainly aimed at resolving the acute problem or pain.

Please note that emergency treatment does not replace a dental examination or definitive treatment, even if in some cases a definitive solution can already be found during the emergency session.

Here you will find instructions on what to do if your teeth are knocked out:

Prophylaxis helps against dental emergencies

As experts, we recommend that you actively prevent dental problems with regular oral hygiene and professional teeth cleaning. You should also have a check-up at the dentist at least once a year. Although problems and toothache cannot always be avoided, you can counteract them with the above recommendations.

Dental problems can occur at any time and it is often difficult for those affected to judge how urgently immediate treatment is required. Can dental treatment wait a few hours, days or even weeks? Or should the nearest emergency service be consulted immediately?

Below we give you a little guidance on when you should visit an emergency dentist . Dental emergencies include severe toothache, infections, broken teeth and lost teeth.

The most common dental emergencies are

  • Abscesses, infections or swollen gums
  • Dental accidents such as broken teeth
  • toothache
  • Broken fillings, loose fillings, crowns, onlays, veneers or bridges
  • Severe jaw pain

In these cases, you should contact your emergency dentist at CITYDENTAL immediately.

There are some indicators that will help you to assess the urgency of a visit to the emergency dentist. For example, if you have lost a tooth or broken a tooth, you should make an appointment with your emergency dentist immediately. Even if you have a severe toothache, you should not hesitate to make an emergency appointmentstraight away! However, if you notice a sensitive area that is not really bothering you, you can usually make a normal appointment with your dentist and wait until then without any worries.

Dental accident

The bones of children and adolescents are not as strong as those of adults, which is why dental accidents occur more frequently. These accidents usually happen during sporting activities or in car accidents. A tooth is often completely knocked out or hit so that it is no longer stable or in the right place in the jaw. In such cases, you should ideally visit your emergency dentist within half an hour of the accident. If the tooth is completely knocked out, please bring it with you and avoid touching the exposed root of the tooth. In the best case scenario, the dentist will be able to reinsert the tooth that has fallen out.

Children's dental emergencies

CITYDENTAL is not only the right contact for dental emergencies in adults, but also a paediatric dentist's emergency practice. Our emergency dentist for children is specially trained to deal with the needs and fears of young and older children. He takes a lot of time for the treatment and has extensive experience in paediatric dentistry.

Toothache

Inflammation inside the tooth can cause severe toothache, as this is where the dental nerves are located, which are extremely sensitive to pain. These inflammations are often caused by holes in the teeth, injuries or infections. In addition, jaw pain can radiate to the teeth and also be perceived as toothache.

Swelling on the jaw

You should always take swelling ofthe jaw or gums seriously, especially if it occurs quickly. Such swelling can indicate dental abscesses, which require rapid treatment by an emergency dentist. Chronic swelling that has been present for some time should also be examined by a dentist, as it can be a sign of cysts or even tumours in the oral cavity.

A dental emergency is when there is severe toothache, swelling, bleeding or a dental accident.

A knocked out, loosened or severely damaged tooth is also considered an emergency. In these cases, a dentist or dental emergency service should be consulted immediately.

If you have an acute toothache, it helps to rinse your mouth with cool or lukewarm water and carefully clean the spaces between your teeth. Cooling from the outside can relieve pain, especially if there is swelling.
Painkillers such as ibuprofen are possible (no aspirin if there is a risk of bleeding) and may also be taken in higher doses for a short time if there are no general medical reasons not to do so.

If the pain persists or is very severe, a dentist should be contacted immediately. CITYDENTAL is there for you 365 days a year.

Do not touch the root of a knocked-out tooth. If possible, rinse carefully with water (do not clean or dry). It is best to store it in a tooth rescue box or alternatively in cold milk.

Then go to the dentist immediately - ideally within 30-60 minutes. Here you can find the directions (Google Maps data) to your nearest practice: Locations

A visit to the emergency dentist is urgently necessary in the event of

  • severe, throbbing pain
  • Thick cheek or pus formation
  • dental accident or knocked out tooth
  • persistent bleeding
  • Broken or sharp-edged tooth

If in doubt, it is better to act too much than too late.

Swelling on the face can indicate a tooth abscess or inflammation. Cool immediately from the outside and do not apply heat.

An abscess is a dental emergency as the infection can spread. See a dentist or emergency service immediately.

Every second counts in a dental accident. The best chance of successful tooth preservation is if the tooth is professionallytreated within the first 30 to 60 minutes. The faster you react, the more likely it is that we can save the tooth permanently.

Correct behaviour for maximum chances of rescue

To ensure that our emergency dentist in Zurich can successfully reinsert the tooth, please note the following points:

  • Don't waste any time: Go to one of our surgeries immediately.
  • Handle the tooth correctly: Only touch the tooth at the crown, never at the sensitive root.
  • Store correctly: Ideally, transport the tooth in a tooth rescue box (from the pharmacy), in cold UHT milk or, if necessary, in saline solution. Never store or clean the tooth dry!
  • Quick reinsertion: In most cases, a tooth that has been replanted in good time can grow back firmly into the jaw.

You can find further important information on behaviour in the event of an injury in our guide to dental accidents.

The loss of a dental crown or filling is no reason to panic, but it does require prompt action to protect the exposed tooth from bacteria and irritants. At CITYDENTAL, we ensure that your dentures are repaired or replaced quickly.

✅ Immediate measures in the event of crown or filling loss

  • Keep it safe: Make sure you bring the crown or inlay that has fallen out with you to your appointment. The dentist can often clean the existing denture and reinsert it securely.
  • Protect the tooth: Avoid eating hard or sticky foods on the affected side.
  • Hygiene: Keep the area clean by brushing your teeth carefully to avoid inflammation of the gums or tooth stump.

⚠️ Why is a visit to the dentist important?

Even if you are not currently in pain, an exposed tooth is susceptible to decay and temperature sensitivity. See a dentist as soon as possible to prevent consequential damage such as nerve inflammation or the remaining tooth structure breaking off.

If pain occurs, we will of course treat you as a dental emergency on the same day. You can find more information under Aesthetic dentistry & prosthetics.

Bleeding after a dental accident:

Heavy bleeding after a dental accident or a surgical procedure can be worrying, but can often be stopped by taking the right action. However, if the bleeding continues, our emergency dental service will be there for you immediately.

First aid: How to stop the bleeding

Follow these steps to treat the wound:

  • Apply pressure: Bite firmly on a sterile compress or a clean, rolled-up cloth handkerchief. Apply constant pressure for about 30 minutes.
  • Keep your head elevated: Avoid lying flat. Keep your head elevated to lower the blood pressure in the head area.
  • Cooling: Place cold compresses or a cooling pad (wrapped in a cloth) on the affected cheek from the outside.
  • Keep calm: Avoid physical exertion, rinsing or spitting, as this can interfere with wound healing.

⚠️ When is the bleeding a case for the emergency dentist?

Does the bleeding last longer than 20-30 minutes, despite constant pressure, or does it occur in gushes? Then don't hesitate. Professional wound care by our experts is absolutely essential in this case.

You can find further tips on behaviour after surgery on our information page on oral surgery at CITYDENTAL.

What is a dental emergency:

Toothache is an important warning signal from your body. As a general rule, you should have any complaints examined by a dentist at an early stage before they develop into an acute problem.

At CITYDENTAL, we won't keep you waiting: every dental emergency is diagnosed and treated on the same day. Walk-in patients are also welcome - just allow a short waiting time so that we can provide you with the best possible care.

When do I need to see an emergency dentist immediately?

Not every pain requires immediate action at night, but in the following situations you should visit our emergency dentist immediately:

  • Pain with swelling & fever: Indicates an advanced infection that needs immediate attention.
  • Dental accident: If a tooth has been broken or completely knocked out, every minute counts for tooth preservation.
  • Heavy post-operative bleeding: When bleeding does not stop after an operation or injury.
  • Unbearable pain: When conventional painkillers no longer provide relief.
